| Peugeot 50cc Speedfight, J Costa Scooter variator performance testing |
Using the latest specification Dyno we would take our trusty unmodified 50cc Peugeot Speedfight and perform a simple test. Once the Peugeot had warmed up we would do three full power runs and record the data.
We would change the variator and fit a Reactive Performance genuine J.Costa scooter variator. The test runs would then be repeated and another three runs performed to give us good comparative data. |
our trusty 50cc Peugeot was unloaded from the back of our van, showing off its new paint job and strapped to the dyno.
Once secured and strapped in place we warmed up the engine. |
The dyno operator joked as he had never had anything with so little power on his dyno ever. Once happy he reset all his software and warmed up the engine in the Peugeot ready for our performance runs. |
A series of three runs were recorded, this would enable a realistic indication of any performance increases or changes to the bph / torque / mph curves. |
With all our data recorded we removed the side casing and removed the old variator. |
This was the old standard variator that we removed and promptly put in the bin. |
This is our nice shiny new J.Costa scooter variator that was due to be fitted into our Peugeot Speedfight. In the box you can see two sets of weights, the variator including a top cover and new spindle. |
Once fitted it was back to the dyno and another set of three power runs. On first fire up we noticed a distinct sound difference with our peugeot, it sounded harsher, more aggressive and stronger.
Once the dyno operator was happy we commenced our three power runs. |
Our tests concluded a noticeable difference to our Peugeot when fitted with a J.Costa variator. The Dyno operator explained the graph and stated that there was quicker acceleration and the power curve was more constant, delivering a gain of 6mph.
We can confirm the above results were obtained using the heavier weights. |
